The term ‘meat’ describes the edible flesh of a wide range of animals:
commonly farmed animals, namely cattle (beef and veal), pig (pork) and
sheep (lamb and mutton); game such as wild pig (boar) and deer
(venison), or get from poultry and birds; and more unusual ‘new meats’
such as alligator and llama. All are good sources of protein and other
nutrients such as iron and B vitamins. But some can also be high in
fats, particularly saturated fats, which everyone should aim to limit
for health reasons. The manufactured meat products can be grouped as
follows: canned meat, frozen meat, poultry, birds, game, sausages,
cured, pickled and smoked meat.
